Are you familiar with the Bette Midler song, "Wind Beneath My Wings"? There is a line in the lyrics that says, "It must have been cold there in my shadow," and I am going to bet that many of you are living in someone else's shadow…never getting that sunlight on your face. Well, I am here to challenge you to come out from behind whatever shadow you've been living behind and create a more successful, barrier free life! Yes, ladies, you are the strength behind every person you come into contact with and can develop the strength to be the wind beneath your own wings!
One of the keys to breaking many types of barriers is emotional intelligence (EI). Yes, my friends, having emotional intelligence and the right coping skills will take you as far in your professional life as it can in your personal life. These are invaluable tools for what I call 'your toolbox of life'.
What is Emotional Intelligence? According to yale.edu, emotional intelligence has been defined as:
•e·mo·tion·al in·tel·li·gence (a.k.a. EQ)
•noun
•the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
•"emotional intelligence is the key to both personal and professional success"
When we are practicing EQ, where are attempting to establish one of the following based on our intentions:
•Elicit emotion
•Elicit verbal response
•Elicit physical response
•Give opinion
•Give advice
•Advise of a feeling/thought
The two basic ideas behind having a high EQ are empathy and compassion. If you begin to make empathy and compassion for others a habit in your daily life, you will not only gain more emotionally healthy skills but, those who come in contact with you will be more drawn to you as well as believe in your integrity and the values and principles you possess.
